IRS App: Why We Recommend It

At Buck Stops Here Accounting, Inc., we look for practical tools that make tax matters easier for our clients. We recommend the IRS app because it helps you stay informed, communicate with us faster, and make timely decisions when tax information affects your finances.

The free IRS app lets you securely check key tax information from your phone instead of waiting for a letter or searching IRS.gov. It replaced IRS2Go in September 2026.

What Is the Biggest Benefit?

Quick, secure access to your tax information in one place.

From your phone, you can check whether the IRS has issued your refund, processed a payment, or posted a notice. When you contact us with a question, that information gives us useful context right away.

The app also helps when you get a suspicious message claiming to be from the IRS. Sign in to the app and see whether a related notice shows up there. Not every legitimate IRS letter will appear in the app, but checking your account can help you spot a scam before you respond to it.

What Can You Do With the App?

  • Check refund and amended-return status
  • View tax balances
  • Make payments and review payment history
  • Access tax records and transcripts
  • View certain IRS notices
  • Get your Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)
  • Update certain account information

These features help you keep track of your tax account between filing seasons. They also give us information we can use to answer your questions and help you respond to IRS activity sooner.

How to Download the App

  1. Visit irs.gov/help/app.
  2. Select the Apple App Store or Google Play link for your device.
  3. Tap "Get" or "Install" to download the free app.
  4. Open the app and sign in to your IRS account. If you don't have one yet, follow the prompts to create it and verify your identity.

If you still have IRS2Go and automatic updates are on, it should update to the new IRS app on its own. If it hasn't, check your app store for an update.

Security reminder: Download the app only through the official IRS website or a verified app store listing. Don't click links in unsolicited emails or texts that claim to be from the IRS.

Why It Matters to Us

We support our clients year-round, not just during tax season. When you can pull up your IRS records, payments, and notices yourself, you can send us accurate information quickly, and we can answer questions and plan next steps with less back-and-forth.
